I couldn’t help but notice that it is only on April Fool’s Day that we can declare Women’s History Month to have met its end, which means,

Women’s History Month does not end.

No, it chatters insufferably on and on, and on—

and on.

Few of us remember the very beginning, in an earlier age, when we organized ourselves in other ways,

But here is how it came to me.

“Women’s History Month! Part Two” was supposed to be about her, but…

I’m not even kidding. When I posted my first Women’s History Month piece, I had two more in mind, with Hailey O’Sentrick coming next. My crowd/demon journal entry was not on the list, though I was considering posting it later (and asking myself whether it would be too ironic to publish a journal entry whose principal value was that it had not been written to publish).

Instead, as the month ticked away and it was time to post Part Two, I could only think of the crowd/demon piece and the joke about strrrrretching it to fit. Oops.

So without further apology, I present the rightful heroine of “Women’s History Month! Part Two,” Hailey O’Sentrick:

The following journal entry is not about women, or Their History, but it was inspired by a few historically significant women and what they shared with me in a crowd from a stage earlier this month.

In other words, this is a strrrrretch (which reminds me of yoga—and women love yoga!).

There’s more, though. Feminism has been the major American cultural movement of my lifetime, and so I have seen its history inhabited, inspired, and possessed by the spirit I felt in this crowd, demon or not.

I don’t keep a journal, and I rarely write without an occasion or an audience, but I felt compelled to capture this revelation for its own sake, late into the witching hours after arriving home from these women’s performances.

It is still unedited, not made for you to read, not shaped into an Official Display Of Me, barely understandable (IYKYK), and it is too late to change that. You’ll see why.

The crowd is not a demon.

I saw a concert tonight by Heart, the rock band from the 1970s and 1980s.

The lead singer, Ann Wilson, was led onto the stage by a handler. She is at least 75 years old and recently made it through cancer treatment. The opening act also had an elderly female singer who was led onto stage in the same way. Both made me catch my breath and hold back tears at their frail humanity devoted to performing the supernatural feats we were about to see.

More than their frailty though, the crowd’s presence is what got me. I watched myself react to these devoted ladies and then realize that the crowd was reacting the same way. I saw hopeful faces awestruck and yearning for their success. I said to myself, “The crowd is not a demon,” and I began to cry.

I have been telling myself that the crowd is a demon for a while now. It is what I saw unmasked when Charlie Kirk was murdered, and it is the same demonic presence many of us noticed throughout the COVID debacle. It makes a direct line through every cruelty I have witnessed, back through history to human sacrifice, the tribe’s victim asking “why me?” while his killers shrug and perform the ritual—PERFORM the ritual, for the crowd.

Without the crowd, there is no ritual and no sacrifice, just another human being.

When Western missionaries confronted tribes engaging in these rituals, this is the light they were following. They may have garbled the message just as badly while performing these missions for their own crowds, but we can all see why they tried and the virtue they were pursuing.

They were trying to snap the crowd out of it.

The crowd is a current. It carries demons and angels alike.

Tonight I saw the crowd without its usual demon. At first I perceived the demon’s absence, like a shadow or afterimage. I saw the individual people, helpless, knowing not what they do. Then I perceived the yearning and the team spirit and almost took it for an angel. It feels like a soaring recognition of oneness and a desire to take up one’s rightful place in the crowd, where just the right amount of authority and submission is waiting like a soft nest. It is a spirit that loves the light but is easily led into darkness.

Some months ago, I saw another band perform to a similar crowd, but the experience was completely different. The band was not real. The band was imitating AC/DC. They did a good job, and the crowd enjoyed it, but it was an imitation of a performance. The crowd got to pretend that we were watching AC/DC, but we knew we were not, a suspension of disbelief. While Ann Wilson tonight was not able to duplicate her younger self’s original performances due to age and health, the imitation band had been unable to perform like AC/DC because they were never AC/DC. Ann Wilson graced us with that connection to her own original talent, and we returned the favor. The imitation band exchanged something with us too, but it was something cruder, a sort of mutual pandering or flattery. Plus, AC/DC’s material is crude and pandering to begin with—singing about “Hell’s Bells” just for effect, so stripped of meaning that it doesn’t even need irony to escape being Satanic.

Another thing awakened too: The crowd needs to be led. 20th century Western culture has celebrated the breakdown and subversion of this leadership, a punk-rock anti-aesthetic masquerading as anti-authoritarian populism but really just pandering to the population like promising a toddler endless candies. And the worst kind of people have exploited this. There is even some evidence that “they” started it, creating entire subcultures of inverted virtues worshipping self-destruction (cf. Laurel Canyon and wild tales of CIA-inspired drug culture). Who benefits from sowing these seeds? People who cannot take leadership without it. But then it is not leadership. It is ruling over ashes.

For this reason I had exited several communities I used to enjoy (or try to enjoy), such as social media. I became very aware of the crowd and its pandering self-performances and how differently we all act under mass observation. This is my “laser dot of mass approval” I discuss in the Twadpockle Report. It is a laser pointer captivating a cute kitten... leading the kitten... where? And this, of course, opens the door to Awareness Recursion Theory, which is all about people watching each other watching each other. Or, an audience performing for its performers. Or, a subculture full of rituals that no one would have thought of on their own and that most members appear to be pretending to embrace, just to satisfy the other members, who are faking it as well. It’s enough to make you go on a mission to snap the crowd out of it.

There may be a way to rejoin these communities with properly tuned intention. There may not. This is making me think about the themes of proper authority that are laced throughout my Human Design chart. They have always been tricky for me. I had a sense of purpose at the concert, watching the fragile crowd needing to be led, palpably aware that I recoil from exercising authority and yet it keeps calling to me and putting me in leadership roles. Am I here to learn these things, to observe and report back... to my next life? (which I don’t entirely believe in) Is there something I can do about this? I have a feeling of rising to a challenge, but I don’t know what.

One thing I can do is stop pandering. I do less of it than ever but probably not zero. And I have to say “probably” because it’s hard to find that boundary. I like being nice to people, and I know it is not something to give up in the name of “not pandering.” That is the light I am trying to follow.

Fortunately, this ain’t our first rodeo. Western culture has had a robust infrastructure of feminism for decades now, and it has become very mainstream and quite well funded. I am sure it will spring into action to help.

Indeed, less than a decade ago, a vicious right-wing conspiracy held that transgender surgeries and hormone therapies were being performed on minors. 😱

Progressive activists roundly denounced this transphobic lie, and thanks to their tireless efforts, PROGRESS occurred:

A “gender-affirming” complex of something called “care” became critical to provide to children, lest they emerge from puberty without it, and professional surgeons all over the country leapt into action to perform these critical, life-saving, transgender surgeries and hormone therapies on minors. 😇

And on the wrong side of all this, once again, the same vicious right-wing conspiracies spouted more hateful nonsense and sowed confusion with slogans such as “What is a woman?”

Well, Adolph, if you can’t tell who’s a woman, then you ain’t no friend of feminism.

We now have woman doctors, woman astronauts, and almost a woman for U.S. President! The enemies of women are becoming shrill and desperate, and their final frenzied affront is to foment epistemic confffusion.

For, if you don’t know who the women are, you can’t be pro-woman. You certainly can’t tell Their History.

Sam Altman on God, Elon Musk and the Mysterious Death of His Former Employee

The set of documents chosen by engineers, to train an AI like ChatGPT, defines a culture: the things the AI is likely to talk about, as opposed to all the semantically valid things it is not likely to talk about. And that’s before adding rules to keep the AI’s answers socially acceptable, as Altman and Carlson discuss in the interview.

Language is not a mere computational abstraction, the way technologists often imagine. It is spoken by people, and it is made for speaking (and thinking) about the things its people tend to speak (and think) about. Even computer languages come with cultures, arising from how their modes of expression invite programmers to write (and think about) computational tasks differently in each language.

I can write valid computer code that would make other programmers scratch their heads and mutter “WHY?”—in the same way, dawg, that I can write a cool English sentence that is like a totally complete grammar unit with downright comprehensibility and even bristles with extra words in it (and a few more right here) but isn’t not unlike something dissimilar to what any rad bloke or hepcat would ever really W-R-I-T-E—what does that spell? Yo!

Also, watch Sam Altman “wing it,” making up his thoughts on serious issues, word by word on the fly—just like ChatGPT! He wishes he had time to think over Carlson’s trickier questions, instead of answering them on the spot.

Yes, perhaps he could have taken the time to think through such tricky questions, before marketing his product as open-ended “intelligence” to the general public. Some people call that “liability” and consider it a moral and fiduciary duty. But then, raising funds from Silicon Valley investors takes up a lot of his time too. Priorities are hard!

I actually find most of Altman’s answers quite measured and reasonable, versus his hype in other media appearances.

Yet, Carlson’s incisive questions expose a rudderless void at the heart of ChatGPT’s social impact, and when Carlson presses him on the strange murder-ish suicide of an employee, it is unsettling at best.

I don’t know whether I am more or less worried than before watching.

These senators sat patiently for three hours, just to take turns interviewing a secretary. I don’t think I could fill a room with people I know who are that serious and disciplined and would not giggle even once. Their questions were detailed and well-rehearsed. We are in good hands!

The secretary answering their questions was Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., of U.S. Health and Human Services. He did a decent job and knew a lot of answers, even though he did not have a script.

Sometimes he got a little rude. Early on, he said some mean things about America’s youth and complained about high rates of disease. Then he turned right around and threatened to fire the very people in charge of Controlling the Diseases, and then he bragged about an uncle who had spent “ZERO on chronic disease.” I’m no doctor, but I’ve been saving up so I can spend more than that.

Later on, a senator who was being pretty nice—despite bragging about having delivered five thousand babies—mentioned that two things can be true at the same time. I thought it was a good point, and Kennedy seemed to agree, and soon the senator, named Marshall, was encouraging Kennedy to say this:

If you just want to turn everything into a sound bite, it makes it—you know, you can’t have a grownup conversation.

They think I’m being evasive, because I won’t make a kind of a statement that’s almost religious in nature. Did it [the COVID vaccine] save a million lives? Well there’s no data to support that, there may be data, you know, there’s no study that—there’s modeling studies, there’s faulty data, I’m not gonna sign onto something if I can’t make it to a scientific certainty. It doesn’t mean that I’m, you know, anti-vax, it just means I’m pro-science.

Overall, Senator Marshall’s performance was actually the most boring, even if he has delivered five thousand babies, and it made me wonder why they filmed three hours of this stuff, which no one has time to watch. They should have focused on the more entertaining performances, like the one by Senator Luján of New Mexico.

Luján almost stumped Kennedy with a very tricky question about whether a specific employee was listed properly on the HHS web site. Kennedy immediately knew that employee by name but pointed out that he was really just a contractor, and other technicalities. Luján’s offer to pull up the web site right then and there did not end up being necessary, and just as the web site issue was fizzling out, Luján revealed that the contractor was not a doctor and had not even gone to medical school.

This flustered Kennedy, who could only agree with both points (another pair of things that could both be true), so Luján brandished a document accusing Kennedy’s contractor of practicing medicine in Maryland without a license, to which Kennedy replied that the contractor is a data analyst, not a doctor, and that the Maryland medical board had been forced to pay $2.6 million for making such a false accusation with “actual malice.”

I would have been embarrassed, but Luján did not miss a beat. He complimented Kennedy’s ability to “know a lot when you want to know a lot,” for which Kennedy called the senator “ridiculous,” forming another pair of things that could both be true.

Luján then offered to speak slowly and clearly so Kennedy could understand his New Mexico accent, demanded the release of an already-public study, and with the poise of a toxic girlfriend at 3:00 am, announced that Kennedy had almost earned a starfish pin but not quite, which I’ll bet is the only time that has ever happened.

• one round of polite speeches by public figures,

• embarrassingly deranged but brief flare-ups from some on the Left, and

• my own passing feelings of yet another tragic news story.

Instead, I have experienced:

• my own immediate feelings of visceral disgust and dissociation,

• discovering that Charlie Kirk was anything but “off-brand,”

• Leftist reaction beyond any dark parody, in spirit and scope,

• denials or equivocations from the moderate Left, who were our last hope for their movement to police itself, and

• feeling another long wave of social alienation and “can’t unsee” like mid 2020.

I wanted to help people understand what is different (unprecedented) about this event and how asymmetrical these cultural forces are, that “both sides” are not arrayed in the same way, though our big world offers examples of almost anything on almost any side.

And so, I have been watching many hours of coverage and commentary from various sources and angles, looking for voices articulating what I have experienced, in a clear, civilized, good-faith manner, including some who disagree and some who only recently saw the light. After assembling half a dozen videos that were quite good, I stumbled across a final entry that covered it all and TOOK the CAKE.

The other top videos will be included in another post.

Before watching this video, write down the most courageous moral choice you’ve ever made. After watching, decide how it compares to this man’s courage. He credits Charlie Kirk for the inspiration to stop “crying in the street” for Black Lives Matter, open up to someone he was told to fear, and spread the truth to people who would rather shun him than listen.

Throughout my own life as a sincere, high-performing American intellectual, my peers have always paid lip service to the kind of moral courage and intellectual independence it took to publish this video.

Sadly, the same peers have steadily acted with moral cowardice and social conformity, immediately discarding truths we all agreed upon “five minutes ago” (as the saying goes) and throwing under the bus those of us who didn’t conform fast enough, because we mistakenly expected something like rational, evidence-based discourse first.

Find the time code where the video’s creator poses this fun question. What is his answer? How does it compare to yours?

Why we can’t have nice things

Why do people like Amir Odom feel the need to make videos like this one? Because the “grown-ups in the room” at the likes of the New York Times are too busy defending their cultural supremacy with gaslighting like this:

Kirk, to my way of thinking, was not a real conservative, at least in the American sense. The point of our conservatism is to conserve a liberal political order — open, tolerant, limited and law-abiding. It’s not about creating a God-drenched regime centered on a cult of personality leader waging zero-sum political battles against other Americans viewed as immoral enemies.

As for Kirk’s style of argument, owning inarticulate liberal kids in mass audience settings for the sake of producing viral videos isn’t real engagement, much less education. Did Kirk ever lose an argument, at least in his own mind?

It’s too bad that Kirk, raised in a Chicago suburb, didn’t attend the University of Chicago. It wouldn’t have hurt getting thrashed in a political debate by smarter peers. Or learning to appreciate the power and moral weight of views he didn’t share. Or recognizing that the true Western tradition lies more in its skepticism than in its certitude.

Do you find this description accurately reflects Charlie Kirk’s material in the video? Which of Kirk’s questions could this writer have slam-dunked with his elite university knowledge? Go ahead, tell me. Right now. It shouldn’t take you five seconds to poke holes in a “God-drenched regime centered on a cult of personality leader waging zero-sum political battles…” as if he were a mere Mark Levin or Joy Reid. One, two, three, four, five. Time’s up!

Perhaps the writer had some other material of Kirk’s in mind? We’ll never know, because he cites NOTHING. Those are not the standards I remember from my elite university (which ranks higher than Chicago, LMAO). Not even my prep school accepted such dreck, sheesh.

In parting, let’s pat this NYT writer on the back for acknowledging the abysmal state of modern university education (including Chicago?). He almost provides the appearance of balance:

Still, Kirk was out there, making arguments, inviting discussion and taking brave risks. Like few others in his generation, he offered a sharp and defiant voice against the tut-tutting illiberalism of today’s campus progressives. Young men thrilled to his message, in part because they were tired of being told that their masculinity was toxic or that their race was guilty or that their civilization was evil. Without the excesses of the left, Kirk would never have become the phenomenon he was.

…

But the larger tragedy by far is that it’s America itself that’s losing sight of all that. In the vacuum that follows, the gunshots ring out.

That’s how it’s done, you see, by elites who went to the amazing University of Chicago, where they teach everything but moral courage: say a shitty, false thing, then a nice red herring (the red ones are prettiest, and the tepidly anti-woke herrings have come into fashion) to mollify opposing arguments without mitigating the falsehood in any way.

Then dust off your hands as if to say, “My job here is done. See how balanced I was.” The grown-ups sigh and go back to sipping afternoon wine, while their loudmouth rugrats continue to tear the place down. In the vacuum that follows.

With gunshots. That ring out. [Elite applause]

No shock, Sherlock!

⁉️ Does it matter who shot Martin Luther King, Jr.? Legally, historically, of course! Politically and culturally, NO! Whether his killing was arranged by the FBI, the KKK, or a shack-dwelling weirdo, the political leverage in killing him—the battery, if you will—came from nationalized anti-black racism. The spectacle of his assassination made him a martyr, supercharged his cause, eliminated a populist voice, struck fear into the black population, rallied racists with a victory… every faction had something to gain, and only because of racism on a national scale. Take away the racist environment, and there is little reason to shoot him.

(I mean, was World War I really about an archduke named Franz? Who even shot him… I’ll have to look that up…)

In the same vein, I do not ultimately care, in the big picture, who shot Charlie Kirk. My entire adult life, which began quaintly as a “default liberal,” has unfolded in an environment of escalating, institutionalized, violent rhetoric against people like Charlie Kirk, fanned into a bonfire of hate by the illiberal Left, careening past Western appeals to the “marketplace of ideas” from all other sides—including the more liberal and naïve 🙈 Left. Anyone who could possibly have shot him did so because of that depraved rhetoric. I have been marinating in it since entering an elite university in the late 1980s, I am very familiar with the subcultures that propagate it unwittingly and on purpose, and you simply cannot gaslight me about how it developed.

I will not be letting this slide any longer. STOP MISGENDERING ME! Be as tolerant and grown-up as my Christian friends, who have never demanded that I conform to their beliefs or trappings.

🪃 In mid 2020, I became deeply disappointed in most people I knew. On an individual and group level, they behaved in ways I had not thought possible, and I saw them in ways I will never unsee. I unplugged from key streams of mass culture and have not gone back. Charlie Kirk’s assassination has left me in a similar state. Though I would not have anticipated it cutting so deeply, it struck immediately Wednesday afternoon, even before I had heard details or commentary. I did not think it was possible for us to sink lower, but we did. I will tolerate even less cultural abuse now than I ever have, while continuing to treat all individuals about 20% better than they treat me.

1. In my gender, pronouns reside in languages, not people. When you refer to people of my gender, you use the constructs of whichever language you are speaking.
   
   English has pronouns for biological sex, Spanish thinks boats are feminine, East Asian languages rarely use personal pronouns, and when they do, the indigenous ones lack gender, which is why your sweet Korean friend has trouble with “he” and “she.” When you inform a citizen of the world that your pronouns are “she/they,” you are committing simultaneous acts of Western cultural tyranny and gender colonization. (Don’t worry, that is nowhere near enough to make you a Nazi!)
   
   What is my gender? It is called the “biological” gender. It is what I identify as. I will write a dedicated post on it soon. Then you will know how to address me without committing violence. In the meantime, I’ll be nice to you as long as you’re not mean to me. Is that cool?

2. Ghe is a pronoun I like, the “personal pronoun of mutual respect.” It has potential. I am working up the courage to ask my doctor about it.

Stewardship is where it’s at!

And, all of this is the subject of my Awareness Recursion Theory. We make grave errors when we reduce law and contract to words, replace those words with their dictionary definitions, and then proceed to derive rights from them.

Instead,

• Body language is not a primitive form of words. Words are an abstract form of body language. And by body language, I mean all behavior. And by words, I mean all COMMUNICATION.

• Communicated INTENTIONS are contracts, whether the COMMUNICATION is written, digital, oral, physical, pantomimed, metaphorically poetic, performance-danced, or otherwise behaviorally encoded and received.

• Our actions demonstrate a preference for the future state we anticipate those actions will take us to, versus the current state of things. That includes INTENTION, which includes purpose.

• You are liable when you INTENTIONALLY put someone in trouble. Your degree of liability depends on all of the above and can only be adjudicated by your peers and their best intuitions, as imperfect as that is, unless/until God volunteers for the job (if He hasn’t already).

Further,

• Rejecting consequentialist arguments for stewardship, BECAUSE of their consequentialism, is unprincipled, due to my next point:

• Principled logic includes consequentialism, in the form of proof by contradiction, in which we reject propositions based entirely on the CONSEQUENCE of their leading to a contradiction. (Shall we sweep that into Argumentation Ethics?)

• Discussion of rights is almost always wrong-headed and should be replaced by discussions of property and the CONTRACT by which its ownership or stewardship was acquired. (This means that when your local government is the steward of a public library, it needs to kick out not only people who are too loud, but also those who are too smelly. And those quietly picnicking in the aisle, even if no one had thought of prohibiting that.)

The RUB:

• The human condition is that we are never certain of other people's communicated intentions or how they are received, or the future consequences of our actions.

• This previous point really sucks.

• The consequentialist in all of us takes that previous point to invalidate all of my points. (But what is the CONSEQUENCE of invalidating them?)

• Despite appearances, and all predictable push-back, all of this is 100% anarcho-libertarian.

• I could argue that last point longer than you could oppose it. (Unless you are a fellow Ashkenazi Jew; then you may succeed by outliving me.)

Around September, a major piece of my life got disrupted and threw off my creative rhythm. This was a good thing that I knew was coming, yet it brought growing pains that were hard to prepare for. I am still regrouping and experimenting and will be back to a more predictable routine when I can.

I enjoyed my first audio episode and plan to record more. Speaking allows me to explore a topic more fluidly, when I don’t have a literary goal. I will still write when an idea comes with a clear sense of story, character, or literary form. Or when I feel like it.

Every major fallacy of TEH SCIENCE™ is on display, with the camera shoved up close in its frontal orifice. There is not a trace of irony, and all performers are unmistakably innocent (yet surely over 18). It’s almost cute.

I love that the two “alternative” dudes have competing theories and that each naively protests the other’s nuanced deviance. Plus, the “straight man” does a lackluster job ramming it home—no matter how well they set him up—because he hasn’t mastered his own epistemology. I think he underestimated this scene and got in way over his head! He definitely didn’t ask for enough money. Maybe he should’ve taken an extra blue pill—the “little” one or the Matrix one, either way.

Admittedly, it can be hard 🍆 to debate a midwit who won’t concede certain “obvious” points that we’ve never quite made ourselves explain before. But that’s the whole point of putting epistemology at the VERY CORE of the scientific method

—if we can be bothered with such nuance before shouting NUMBERS DON’T LIE!!!!

—which we can’t, at this moment in Western technocratic culture.

I decided to talk through this one instead of writing. It allows for more exploration and is a more personal way to communicate. I have more mind-bending topics to explore like this before I’ll know how I want to write about them.

I’m sorry about the popping and clicking sounds in the background. I did run a “click remover” tool on them, to no avail, and I did the first obvious round of troubleshooting. I will keep investigating for next time. For now, it’s not too bad if you stay some distance away from the speakers.

I mention evolution in passing, so here are a few points for background:

• “Micro” evolution is not in dispute. This is the fact that offspring have traits from their parents, and therefore a population’s traits can shift gradually over time. Dog breeders prove this on a daily basis.

• “Macro” evolution, or “molecules to man” evolution is the theory that life arose naturally from non-life, due to certain molecular structures’ tendency to replicate themselves. Because it is a historical claim, we are unlikely ever to have more than circumstantial evidence that life actually arose this way, even if we were to prove that it could—which we have not, although there are strong principles of entropy and system stability that might lead in this direction.

• The fossil record is purely circumstantial evidence. Future archaeologists might find that the deeper they dig, the more simple are the remains of the cars they find, and at a certain depth, they find only the precursors to cars. This does not prove that cars evolved through a natural process.

I have a lot more to say about evolution and Scientism! They will probably appear in future episodes.
